Will you help us bring our Country's Gold Star Families like Thania and her boys to Captain Joseph House

“In September 2011, I lost my husband and our boys lost their dad. And in the midst of our devastation, we also lost our community - the military wives and families that had become our village- when we had to move off base. Betsy invited me to come to her home in Washington and meet with another widow – Elisa Apolinar – whose husband Marty was killed in May 2011, along with Captain Joseph Schultz. Like me, Elisa was also pregnant with her second son when she lost her husband. We connected on a level few others understood, and it helped me understand that I was not alone. It helped to talk, laugh and cry with someone going through the same thing. Our kids had fun together, feeling a little bit back to normal. We have stayed in touch; we help each other to this day.” Thania Sayne's husband, Army SGT Timothy D. Sayne was killed in Afghanistan in September 2011.

Captain Joseph House will provide a respite for Gold Star Families on the journey from grieving victim to empowered survivor; from familiar military community to civilian life.

The House is the first Family-to-Family respite home in the country created to lend support to Gold Star Families of our military’s Fallen Heroes. Each week, three Gold Star Families will be invited to participate in a six-day visit at Captain Joseph House at no cost to the Families. The House provides a safe and peaceful environment where new friendships can take root and Families can draw strength from each other. It will allow Family members to connect on a more personal level with others on a similar journey in a home-away-from home setting.
